I've been using a combination of different things to get these done and I think I've found a good groove.

First fill in all black spots with the waverly ink, then use black watercolor to blend the shadings out, then color.

So far this has been the easiest method for me.

Also, the dragon kind of reminds me of mushu from Mulan.
